Food & Basic Needs:

Hope Clinic provides access to free groceries, fresh produce, hot meals, and personal care items for those in need. We serve thousands of families each year, and always need volunteers in this area. Some volunteer opportunities include:

  • Organizing food donations, restocking shelves, etc. (Mon/Weds/Fri afternoons).

  • Helping receive and organize food deliveries from Food Gatherers (Tues/Thurs mornings). This may involve unloading items directly from the truck and into our building.

  • Unloading, distributing, and organizing our daily donations (Mon thru Fri). We call this job “Lobby Runner!” Volunteers may need to lift up to 50 lbs and be on their feet for extended periods of time.

  • Delivery groceries to the homebound (Weds/Fri). Volunteers can sign up to pack bags for our contactless porch delivery, or as drivers to deliver these prepared groceries to clients.

Medical Clinic:

Licensed medical professionals: Our medical clinic operations at both Ypsilanti and Westland are looking for U.S. licensed care providers for patient care, such as Nurses, Physicians, Pharmacists, EMTs. If you are currently licensed and willing to help provide needed care to our neighbors in need, we encourage you to fill out our medical volunteer interest form.

Right now: seeking Pharmacists and medical providers (MD, DO, NP, PA)  at the Ypsilanti Clinic and Clinicians and Clinician's Associates at the Wayne Clinic.

Dental Clinic:

Licensed Dentists and Hygienists: We are seeking U.S. licensed dentists and hygienists available to volunteer their services at our location in Ypsilanti or those available to accept Hope’s patients at your own dental office (Washtenaw or Wayne County). If you are currently licensed and willing to help provide needed care to our neighbors in need, we encourage you to fill out our dental volunteer interest form.

Behavioral Health:

Licensed Human Services Professionals: We are seeking U.S. licensed social workers, therapists, and other human services professionals to volunteer at our Ypsilanti location. If you are currently licensed and willing to help provide needed care to our neighbors in need, we encourage you to fill out our human services interest form.

Students or others not yet licensed in the U.S.: Our clinics do not have any volunteer openings at this time for students or others not yet licensed in the U.S. We encourage you to consider volunteering in other program areas at Hope in the meantime, as a wonderful way to get familiar with Hope operations and the same clients that utilize our clinic services. The most volunteer opportunities are in our Food Programs, currently serving more of those in need than ever before.

What if there are no current volunteer openings for my area of interest?
The Food Program and Lobby/First Impressions Team at our Ypsilanti location are always in need of volunteers, and these shifts are a good place to start out. Though we try to find a match for everyone who expresses interest, sometimes schedules don’t line up, or your needs and ours don’t match up. Don’t be discouraged! Many of those who apply to volunteer in our clinics or office support roles have begun by volunteering in Food and Lobby Runner shifts, and have found this to be a great introduction to Hope’s operations, and the work being done for our neighbors in need. The same patients that utilize our clinic and office services also utilize our food programs, so there is still an opportunity to become familiar with our patient population and their needs which extend beyond clinic care.

What type of volunteering is available for students?
We encourage students looking for volunteer hours to sign up for the available shifts with our Food Programs and Lobby Runner roles at our Ypsilanti location, or consider some of our offsite projects. (Use the Youth Interest Form for this)

Can I get patient-contact hours for school/licensing requirements?
Volunteering in patient-contact roles is primarily available for licensed care providers in essential roles or for trained/experienced admin team members. Student or unlicensed volunteers are not typically placed with direct patient contact. However, volunteer options available in our food program and lobby areas can help volunteers at least get to know and serve the very same clients that utilize our clinic services.

How can I get verification/documentation of my volunteer hours?
Requests for verification of volunteer hours served should be directed to the program manager overseeing the area in which you are volunteering, or the person who oversees your volunteer schedule. They will be able to review volunteering records in their program area and provide verification of your hours there. Be sure to follow any sign-in/sign-out procedures that are associated with your volunteer shifts so that our records will properly reflect your service.

Can my young kids get involved?
Volunteers ages 12-14 are welcome to volunteer onsite at our Ypsilanti location in our Food Program shifts with a parent/adult on shift. Note that both the adult and the minor(s) should each complete a volunteer application, with parent/guardian signature required on the release forms for the minor. Available shifts usually involve our food pantry, farm stand produce distribution days, packing/prepping groceries for delivery to homebound patients, distribution of baby care essentials, stocking/organizing shelves, and lobby donation runner shifts. The parent and the minor would each access the online scheduler system and look for shifts where two slots are available for sign up and then each sign up for the same shift so that a slot is reserved for both on that shift.

Volunteers ages 15 and up are welcome to volunteer on their own in the same type of shifts as available in the scheduler system, as long as parent/guardian signature is provided on release forms for the minor volunteer.

Volunteers under the age of 12 can work in support of Hope’s mission through Hope Clinic’s Offsite Projects. Adult grocery delivery driver volunteers might also consider bringing along young family members on their delivery route, since that is done off-site and in your own vehicle.
