Summer is on its way, and you know what they say:
"Michigan has two seasons: winter, and construction!"
We wanted to let you know about some upcoming construction on Harriet Street that will affect how you access Hope Clinic for the next few months.
Phase 1 of the project includes water main replacement—our main is over 70 years old! Some nearby residents also have lead service lines, which will be replaced as a part of this project. We know how important this is for folks' health, and replacing aging infrastructure will help ensure a future of safe, uninterrupted water service here at Hope.
However—that water main? It's under the street.
This brings us to Phase 2 of the project, which is that the City is taking this opportunity to 1) completely replace the road, 2) upgrade the sidewalks and curbs for greater wheelchair accessibility, 3) add pedestrian crossings, and 4) attempt to improve overall safety for our patients, volunteers, and immediate neighbors.
This is going to cause some inconvenience, but we'll be doing our best to keep you informed at each stage of the project. Starting next week (May 11-ish), we'll see a closure of Harriet westbound, which means you'll need to follow the detour route below to reach Hope Clinic. Later on in the summer, the route will be reversed when Harriet is closed eastbound. Street parking will not be available during these times, but lot parking should be unaffected.
We will be making every adaptation possible, with the help of the City, to keep Hope Clinic as accessible as possible to patients, volunteers, and partners like Food Gatherers and others. We appreciate your spirit of flexibility to carry us through this bumpy (probably literally) summer. In the end, Harriet Street will be a safer, more welcoming place for all, and we're looking forward to it!
We'll publish relevant updates on social media as they become available, and any closures related to the water main work will appear on both our social media and website.
Thank you for your faithful support (and renunciation of road rage) during this important project!
